About Us
Hayward Mortuary was started by Charles “Truck” and Edith Machado in 1935. Together they served the Hayward community not only with their funeral home but with the first ambulance company in Hayward. They raised four sons: Pat, Bob, Rich and John Machado. Pat and John followed in their parents footsteps working in the family business.
When Charlie “Truck” Machado died in 1973, his oldest son Charles Patrick Machado Jr. (Pat) became president of Hayward Mortuary and continued in the family tradition of offering exceptional funeral service to the community. The youngest son John, who is 17 years younger than Pat, returned after graduating from college to assist in the family business.
In 1988 the brothers built Machado’s Hillside Chapel next to Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. A crematory was also established at this location. Eventually John became the manager for both the mortuary and the crematory. In 1996, Pat retired from active participation leaving John to carry on the family legacy. In 2006 the business was purchased by the diocese of Oakland and renamed Holy Angels Mortuary operated by the Catholic Church.
In 2017, John, wishing to continue serving the Hayward community started and currently manages the Machado Funeral & Cremation Service.
